Island residents can bring household garbage, large household items, electronic waste, residential recycling, scrap steel, yard waste, and used tires. Scrap steel and eligible electronics are diverted for recycling.
Garbage, tags & tipping fees
Household garbage must be bagged and tagged or paid for as loose or untagged waste. The current tipping rate is $125 per tonne, with a $15 minimum charge per visit.
Large items
Each Township household has two Free Large Item Disposal Opportunities each year. One opportunity covers up to one pickup-truck load of qualifying furniture, carpet, bathroom fixtures, or major appliances. Bring proof of residency.
What must go elsewhere
Household hazardous waste, construction and demolition material, drywall, masonry, shingles, manufactured wood products, medical or dental waste, and other prohibited materials cannot be accepted. Check the Township list before loading an uncertain item.
Emergency readiness
Prepare for at least 72 hours
Storms, power failures, and ferry interruptions can make island households harder to reach. A well-kept emergency kit buys time and reduces pressure on local responders.
Store four litres of water per person per day and enough ready-to-eat food for at least three days.
Keep flashlights, batteries, charged power banks, and a battery or hand-crank radio. CJAI broadcasts locally on 101.3 FM.
Include prescriptions, first aid, copies of essential documents, emergency contacts, cash, and supplies for pets or infants.
Keep fuel in the vehicle, know the nearest grid-address marker, and plan for cold, heat, medical needs, and a temporarily unavailable ferry.

Burn bans override ordinary permission
Do not assume yesterday’s conditions still apply. Restrictions can change with weather and fire risk.
Some fires require a permit
Brush and agricultural fires require a permit. The current permit fee is $25; permits are conditional and may be revoked.
Small contained campfires
A campfire no larger than 60 by 60 centimetres in a contained appliance or fireplace with a spark screen does not ordinarily require a permit, but bans still apply.
Never burn garbage
Burn barrels are prohibited. Burn only permitted wood and wood products or leaves, and never household garbage or construction material.
